Apples 101


We at Emma Krumbee’s know how great of a food apples are – in fact, we’ve become experts on the subject! We’d like to share some information about apples with you just in time for the harvest season:

Healthy Apple Facts
• Apples are fat, sodium, and cholesterol FREE.
• A medium apple is about 80 calories.
• Apples are a great source of the fiber pectin. 1 apple has 5 grams of fiber.
• Don’t peel your apple. 2/3 of the fiber and lots of antioxidants are found in the peel. Antioxidants help to reduce damage to cells.

Unusual Apple Facts & History
• Apples float because 25% of their volume is air.
• In colonial time, apples were called winter banana.
• Apples are a member of the rose family.
• The apple tree originated in an area between the Caspian and the Black Sea.
• Apples were the favorite fruit of ancient Greeks and Romans.

Apples by the Number
• Apples ripen 6-10 times faster at room temperature than if they were refrigerated.
• 2 pounds of apples make one 9-inch pie.
• 7,500 varieties of apples are grown throughout the world.

How to Store Apples
“Apples kept cool keep best!” Keep cool – below 45° if possible, but no lower than 32° and a 90% humidity environment. Apples stored at a low humidity will deteriorate six to ten times faster than when they are properly stored and cooled. Keep them in plastic bags that have holes in them. Place a moist towel in the bag with the apples and keep them in the crisper of the refrigerator.

Apples purchased by the box or bushel should be stored in a cool, humid cellar. If the cellar is dry, cover apples with wet cloth.
